LOCA represents the residents and home owners at the lakeside community of Lake Ōkareka.
Lake Ōkareka is 15 minutes drive from Rotorua and is close to Lake Tikitapu, Rotokakahi and Tarawera. Ōkareka is popular year round, with beaches accessible by car and boat. Activities include picnics or barbeques, swimming, water skiing, yachting, kayaking, waka ama, and rainbow trout fishing. There are also a number of lakeside and bush walks around the Lake. A strong community spirit features a volunteer Fire Brigade, Tennis Club with 2 new AstroTurf courts, a Community Hall available for hire (and is home to the Ōkareka Preschool) and the Ōkareka Fishing Club has two annual competitions.
Landcare Ōkareka is another active volunteer group who maintain most of the public areas and walkways to a high standard, which has been recognised by a number of environment enhancement and beautification awards. A substantial area of Lake Tikitapu Scenic Reserve between Lake Ōkareka and Lake Tikitapu is being actively controlled, with assistance from the Rotorua branch of Forest and Bird and the Rotorua Botanical Society, to reduce rat and possum numbers and weed growth. The purpose of this work is to encourage bird life and to encourage the re-establishment of native mistletoe within the Reserve.
A wide range of rental accommodation is available at Lake Ōkareka, together with basic camping facilities at Boyes beach and at the Department of Conservation Camp and picnic beach up Millar Road, and the Top 10 Holiday Park and food shop at Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake).
The Lake Ōkareka Community Association (LOCA) endeavors to promote, conserve, preserve and advance; the interests and welfare of the community at Lake Ōkareka; the environmental natural features and physical amenities of Lake Ōkareka; and foster for the public benefit of a harmonious relationship within the community of Lake Ōkareka.
Membership to LOCA is $20 per year. Many issues face our lake, with the committee continually responding to Council and government plans. LOCA also publishes a quarterly newsletter which is distributed to financial members.
