More than enough fun, froth and flying fish to fill up a fabulous family day of fun! Mark your diaries now for the great family race - The Flying Trout -organised by members of the Lake Okareka Preschool.
The date for the Flying Trout is now Saturday 12 November 2011. If you didn’t make it to last years inaugural event you don’t want to miss out this year. There are 7 races so that every family member can take part.
The day starts with the 5km trail challenge and Killer Mountain run, over Longfords Farm, taking in some breathtaking views. The Terminator races follow: The Terminator Mud Smash is aimed at kids 5 - 8 year olds and the Double Terminator 9-12 year olds. The course is a bit mad so prepare to get wet, muddy and covered in froth as you go down the super water slide over the finish line to collect your chocolate trout. The Fairies and Superheroes Scamper is an obstacle course much like the Terminator events but of course to suit preschoolers - if they can walk, they can do it! Finally the day finishes how it starts, with much laughter, while crazy mums, dads, grandparents, aunties or uncles get themselves or their gumboots dressed up and compete in the Mad Mums Gumboot run and the Fathers Frocking Frolics. Thanks to the Lake Okareka volunteer firefighters, all events end with every competitor flying down the super water slide in a wet frothy heap and across the finish line to collect their chocolate trout! Yeeha!!

Leslie Goddard celebrates 10 years at Lake Okareka Preschool
Lake Okareka Preschool celebrated with Leslie Goddard her 10th year teaching at the preschool in August with a Wacky Weslie day. Chair of the preschool Kathy Maling said Leslie's contribution to the preschool over the past ten years has been outstanding. "Leslie's teaching style ensures the preschool is of high quality and loads of fun. She is a dedicated, high energy, enthusiastic and compassionate teacher and has really set a benchmark in teaching practices for our preschool."
The children and teachers came dressed in their wacky clothes or hairstyles to celebrate Leslie's achievement. Wacky Weslie Wednesday ended with Leslie reading the children an upside down story.

Leslie says that "I have the best job and love what I do. It is a pleasure to come to work everyday and feel that I have such an important part in the education of such awesome children. I really enjoy working with our team of teachers as we have been teaching together for the past four years."

Educational Programme
The children are currently learning about different ways to communicate. As children need to learn these important skills for life, we encourage self expression and social skills as part of our daily programme.
We have been very fortunate to have Siew Bek teach the children Mandarin Chinese again this term. The children are developing communication skills in a different language to their own.Drama is also explored with a special trip to the Gruffalo Show and the children are very excited to see the characters of a story they know and love.

In September Puppet Vision will be coming to see us at Preschool. Puppet vision, with Dan and Ruru the Road Safety Morepork, will be teaching the children safe and sensible behaviour around and on the road.
Special thanks
Over the school holidays the Preschool had a new fence built. This was a fantastic effort and we would especially like to thank Guy Gaddum and his friends who built the fence and provided the extra materials as well. Thanks to the Council, for the timber, and to the LOCA Committee, and Preschool parents for their support in making this possible.
Parent library
We do have a selection of informative books about parenting, child activities and much more. All parents of the Preschool children are able to access the library.
Community support
You are now able to support our latest fundraiser by bringing in your cardboard, and paper items such as magazines, newspapers etc.
We cannot accept paper or cardboard that is contaminated with food, excessive dirt, grease etc.
You can recycle and support your Community Preschool by utilizing our recycle bin.
