Lake Okareka Tennis Club
The Tennis Club is located on Council owned land adjacent to the Lake Okareka Hall and in the past has been an essential and active part of the community. Currently there is a resurgence of interest in the Club and it seems that it may once again be a vibrant keystone of our wonderful community. The Club has a wide range of adult members but the large number of new members comes from families with children in the five to fifteen range.

The main club night is Monday at 5.30 when you can find an informal adults game. Currently too, there is coaching on a Friday evening at the club which caters for around 35 children with two professional coaches and this forms a great social base for parents and children to meet. Children who are too young to play tennis are occupied safely at the adjacent Hall play ground while the older children attend the coaching sessions. There also is a barbeque for the children.

New surfaces & Clubhouse upgrape

The courts have been upgraded with Astroturf surfaces (and new fencing) which will serve our community for another twenty years and build a new generation of Lake Okareka tennis champions by harnessing the sporting ability in our streets and lanes. Who knows – we may even build a notable interclub team to take on and conquer Rotorua? At worst the new surfaces will well serve those who want an occasional bash at tennis for themselves or their guests.

Membership
Membership is a cornerstone of the club’s survival. The club is very inclusive and members are constantly sought. The committee is in the process of contacting former members and in particular life members from decades past. If you are a life member or founding member we would love to see you at the Club or at least get in contact – there will be Reopening celebrations and we would like to invite you! Any former players at the Club are wanted at Club night – Monday 5.30pm - especially the older ones who must be easier to beat by now!

In an effort to increase membership juniors coaching has been offered on Friday evenings. This has been hugely popular and gives confidence that there is a great desire in the community for the Club to prosper. This culminated on 4 December with informal 2009 Lake Okareka Tennis Club Junior Tennis Champs. About 30 family memberships have issued with in excess of 100 individuals belonging. The autumn coaching session will re-start in February.

The Lake Okareka Bash
The “Bash” at the Community Hall on November 7 last year proved very successful with around a hundred locals supporting an enjoyable evening. Proceeds of the evening were donated to the Club and our coffers swelled by over $4000. Many thanks to the 3 locals who organised the evening – Cate Mills, Megan Douglas and Gill Kenna. Thanks also to the auction donors and all the people who participated. Great fun was had by all.

Clubhouse upgrade
There have been working bees on the Clubhouse. It has a new coat of paint which is transforming the Club House into architectural eye candy.
