I am delighted to announce that the Rotorua branch of Forest and Bird have been awarded the Forest and Bird Pest Busters Award for 2012, for the Tikitapu Pest Control Project.
A very big thank you to those of you who have helped on this project during the past years.
It is wonderful to have the work and the effects that have been achieved acknowledged in this way.
This year we will not be doing any pest control, having been strongly advised to give the reserve a rest by the Department of Conservation and Bay of Plenty Regional Council. This will help prevent any bait shyness developing and give the ground a rest from any toxins building up. There will still be a working bee programme during the year with track work, maintaining bait lines, removing unused bait stations, rat tracking, possum monitoring with wax tags, bird counts and possibly a bat survey and opportunity for anyone interested to help with a Foliar Browse Index survey.
The programme for the year is –
July Sunday 15th and Monday 16th
August Sunday 5th and Monday 6th
September Friday 7th and Saturday 8th
October Sunday 14th and Monday 15th
November Friday 23rd and Sunday 25th
I would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to become involved in any of these activities.
