As you can see Landcare Okareka now has a logo which shows our support for the lakeside environment in which we live. The bird represents the many species of wild fowl that live in the area – scaup, dab chick, coot, mallard, shovellers and so on. There is a coloured version in green and blue. So we think that the logo captures important aspects about the environment where we live. Our thanks go to Geoff Tobin, a friend and graphic artist from Auckland, for his help with creating this logo.
Recently volunteers from Landcare Okareka had a busy Saturday working bee filling sand bags to help retain lake side banks, especially in the area near the shade shelter. In this area erosion caused by high water levels and wave action caused by winds and boats is having quite a toll with a few metres of the lake banks having already been eroded away. The work LO volunteers undertook in this area about 18 months or so ago is working really well and holding the lake banks well, so we thought we would do more to protect this area.
Some of the Landcare Okareka Steering Committee met recently with Clark McCarthy from Rotorua District Council and we hope to see a more definite and planned programme of maintenance work carried out by RDC / Castlecorp over the coming months. Hopefully we will get some metal for the walkway track surface and some help with putting this on the track, especially in the area near the toilets and shade shelter. Clark also has some ideas for lifting the part of track from the end of the boardwalk that gets so wet when the lake levels are high.
Some of you may have noticed by now that work has commenced on the
Okareka Reserve, between Loop Road and Summit Road, up above the
pumping station. This will be a work in progress over several years. We do not expect that this will be completed sooner, as the area concerned has a great deal of weeds growing in it.
We will just gradually work away at it.
Landcare Okareka will continue this year to run working bees on the
4th Saturday of each month – watch out for the sign boards that alert Okareka residents as to the working bees and where they will be held. We are very happy to welcome new volunteers, and would love to see you if you are able to give some help.
