Landcare Okareka volunteers have spent the past few months undertaking several planting Working Bees. Over 3,000 plants will have gone into the ground around the village reserves over this winter, focusing especially on the area known as Lake Okareka Scenic Reserve. This area lies in the corner of land bordered by Summit Road and Lake Okareka Loop Road, above and around the sewerage pumping station. Plants have been supplied by both Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Rotorua District Council.
Some progress has also been made on getting a walking track completed from the top of Summit Road down to near the bus shelter on Lake Okareka Loop Road. Elizabeth Wood, Roading Engineer from Rotorua District Council has been very helpful with this project. She has arranged for some second hand culvert pipes to be installed by Fulton Hogan adjacent to Summit Road. This is to make a place for the walking track to come down from Summit Road. Landcare Okareka volunteers will get the work on the pathway completed, with a gravel surface, over the next couple of months.
Over the summer Landcare Okareka volunteers will continue to undertake maintenance of their plantings around the Okareka village reserves. This usually consists of weed control work. We also undertake trimming of vegetation along the Lake Okareka Walkway. Keep an eye out for the sign boards which advertise the monthly working bees. If you are interested to help, please come along – or contact Sandra 3628 865 and ask to be added to the email list of volunteers. We are always happy to welcome volunteers to our working bees.
