Since the last report Landcare Okareka volunteers have undertaken a few formal Working Bees and of course a large amount of other voluntary work. Working bees have involved a joint working bee with Rotorua Branch of Forest and Bird members planting an area of Tikitapu Reserve, near the entrance to the Nature Walk off Tarawera Road. Landcare Okareka also had a planting in the area of Tikitapu Reserve opposite Benn Road, bulking up the existing planting and pushing back into the weeds in the reserve in that area.
The most recent Working Bee saw Landcare Okareka volunteers take Dennis Falconer's barge (thanks, Dennis) loaded with some willing volunteers, bags of ready concrete, spades, shovels, and various other tools – along with 2 barbeque tables, to install down at Silver Beach. One of the tables was kindly donated to Landcare Okareka by Johlene Kelly (ex DOC Rotorua) and the other table has been recycled from near the start of the walkway, with some additions. Both tables have had some carpentry alterations done to them with stronger legs and seats added – thanks to the very capable skills of Brian Law, and with financial support from Rotorua District Council – thanks to Walter Miller. We hope that people using Silver Beach will enjoy using these tables over the months and years to come.

Over the past few months a lot of other work has been undertaken by Landcare Okareka volunteers – including regular mowing of the area at the start of the walkway and between Longfords farm gate and the walkway entrance.
Many of you will have noticed that the mowing of reserve areas by Castlecorp is quite some time apart now – this is one of RDC's means of cutting costs. There has been a lot of volunteer hours spent undertaking weed control along the walkway and in numerous places around the village.
Landcare Okareka volunteers are also doing track edge trimming from Silver Beach area out to the walkway end.
Those of you who use the Okareka Walkway regularly will have noticed that in recent days, large amounts of metal are being stockpiled for walkway track maintenance. There will be some work done on spreading some of this metal soon.
We understand that the part of the track that has been very wet with the high lake levels and wet weather – from the end of the boardwalk for 200 - 300 m is going to get some special attention very soon.
There will be more work done with drainage out in the kowhai grove near Silver Beach.
