Dear Landcare Okareka Volunteers

Thank you to everyone who has come and helped with all of the Landcare Okareka working bees over the past few months.

We have one last planting working bee planned for this Saturday 1st November 2014.

WHERE: Please meet at the launching ramp and jetty area, Acacia Road, Lake Okareka a bit before 9 am. We will be using Dennis Falconer's barge  to transport some very large pohutukawa plants and some Cyperus ustulatus plants, some compost / mulch, tools and people down to the shade shelter area along the Lake Okareka walkway.
If you are a bit late and miss the barge, please drive to the entrance of the Lake Okareka walkway further along Acacia Road, and walk down to where we will be doing the planting along the walkway.

WHAT ARE DOING: planting and some basic track maintenance work.

WHAT TO BRING: Please wear appropriate clothing (bring your wet weather gear just in case), strong shoes or boots, sun hat & sunscreen, gardening gloves and a life jacket (if you have one - we will have some spares with us), a planting spade, a rake and a shovel. A couple of strong wheelbarrows could also be useful.

We will bring cold drinking water & cups, and makings for morning tea.

This will be the last planting working bee for this year so we look forward to seeing many of you there.

Saturday 1st November, at Boyes beach from 1 - 3 pm: "Virtually on Track" launch.
Also staff from Sport Bay of Plenty and DOC, assisted by some people from Okareka will be launching "Virtually on Track" at Boyes beach from 1 - 3 pm also on Saturday 1st November 2014. There will be kayaking, walking and conservation activities such as endangered species tracking and animal pest control, highlighted. Please feel free to check this out on the Sport Bay of Plenty web site and come along to learn more.

Kind regards

Tarawera Trail

9/10/2014

Dear Landcare Okareka Volunteers

I have just received this lovely email message of thanks from Karen and David Walmsley to pass onto everyone who came and helped with the Tarawera trail planting last Saturday. I too would like to thank everyone who came and helped with this planting, as the weather was far from pleasant.

Kia ora Sandra and Mike,

Well I am sure we would have all warmed up by now. What a wonderful turnout we had on Saturday for the tree planting at the Tarawera Trail car-park.

Thank you to all your group who are just amazing how they come and just get into it. We certainly had some weather challenges on that day but in spite of that there were a lot of trees planted. Please pass on our thanks to all your group Sandra.

Can you confirm where you will be for this Saturday's work, I think my ears were frozen shut when we were talking last Saturday, so we can pass it round so people know about it.

Again thank you for your dedication and support.

Nga mihi nui - best regards
Karen and David Walmsley

First Working Bee for Lake Okareka Walking Track‏

6/10/2014

Kia ora everyone

Following a very meaningful blessing ceremony with karakia for the workers and the project by local kaumatua Anaru Rangiheuea last Thursday, we are now ready to begin work on the new track, stage 1 from Boyes beach to the DOC camp and beach off Millar Road.

So the first Working Bee for the new walking track and the volunteers will be from the DOC camp and beach end, 226 Millar Road (at the end of the seal).
This is a joint Lake Okareka Community Assn and Landcare Okareka project.

WHEN: This Saturday 11th October 2014 from 9 am to 12 noon. Please park in the car park at the camp, not in the campers spaces. The area where we are working is down off the track to the jumping off rock - go to the double toilets, up the few steps, and follow the track to the left across the fallen tree. There will be some signs to follow if you are later getting there.

WHAT TO BRING: Please wear suitable clothing, strong footwear, wet weather gear (if it looks like it will rain) or sun hat and sun block, gardening gloves, a spade and grubber, secateurs, loppers - if you have them. Bring a drink and a snack - we will provide some morning tea.

Please pass this email onto any other people who you think could be interested to help with this project.

If you no longer wish to receive these emails please let me know and I will remove your name from the list.

Kind regards
