Kia ora Rotorua Green Drinkers

The next Green Drinks event is Tuesday 6 September, 2016.

Topic: ROTORUA MAYORAL CANDIDATES AND SUSTAINABILITY

For the upcoming Green Drinks all the Mayoral candidates for the Rotorua Lakes Council will take part in a panel discussion. This event is an opportunity for the candidates to articulate their sustainability policies and respond to questions. Each candidate will provide a five minute presentation about their sustainability policies followed by questions from the floor.  The key question up for discussion is:

“What would a Council under your leadership do to protect/improve the environment and health of its residents, while at the same time enable a flourishing local economy?”

The candidates were given the following list as a prompt for possible issues they could discuss during their five minute presentation:
·       Wastewater and air quality
·       Waste management / recycling
·       Sustainable transport - cycling, walking, public transport
·       Reducing Council / District CO2 emissions , and increasing CO2 sinks (e.g. land use /               farming / forestry / soil carbon)
·       Healthy food-healthy people e.g. “farm-to-fridge” / “plot-to-plate” local food economy.
·       Inner city revitalisation – sustainability-related topics e.g. transport/connectivity, zoning           (commercial  vs residential)

A detailed timetable and guidelines for this event is provided below.

The mediator for this event will be Richard Gillies from the Rotorua Green Drinks Committee.

Where & When:
We meet at the beautiful Blue Baths on the first Tuesday of every month and you are welcome to arrive anytime from 5pm onwards and join us for a drink (open bar between 5pm and 5.30pm). The presentation will start at 5.30pm and we conclude the evening at 7pm. Entry is by gold coin donation.

Dear Landcare Okareka Volunteers and Supporters

This is just to say a huge thank you to all of the lovely people who came to help with the planting day yesterday (Saturday 27th August) at the Tarawera Road refuse transfer station.

There were volunteers from Lake Okareka, Rotorua city, and Lake Tarawera - and some who had travelled some distances to get to the working bee. Thank you also to those people who helped out with baking for an awesome morning tea that was enjoyed by everyone. Thank you to the women from the regional council - Samantha, Rosemary, Hariata and her friend Erena - who brought the plants and then assisted Mike and Brian to lay them out ahead of the planters. Together we all planted approx 1400 plants before 11.30 am - and we also had morning tea and a catch up break during that time.

All give yourselves a huge pat on the back - well done - "Many hands make light work" - great team work.
Your help and support is most appreciated.

Kind regards

Working Bee this Saturday 27th August 2016

Dear Landcare Okareka volunteers and supporters

The Working bee this month is at the Tarawera Road refuse transfer station. This is a joint working bee for both Lake Okareka and Lake Tarawera communities. Other volunteers are also invited to come along and help. The perimeter of the Tarawera Road transfer station was filed with all kinds of invasive weeds. Over the past 18 months a lot of weed control work has been carried out by a crew from Rotorua Contracting (Rotorua Lakes Council) and other private contractors. This has partially been paid for by Lake Okareka Community Assn with funding coming from overnight campers at Boyes beach, Lake Okareka.

Plants for this Working Bee are being funded by Bay of Plenty Regional Council.

Where: Tarawera Road refuse transfer station
When: Saturday 27th August 2016, from 9 am. Health & Safety briefing at 9 am.
What To Bring: suitable clothing and strong footwear (wet weather gear, if wet), gardening gloves, planting spades. Drink bottle.
Drinking water and morning tea will be provided.
Parking will be within the fenced transfer station area, which is not open to the general public for refuse transfer on Saturday.
We hope to see many of you at this planting working bee.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
