Invitation to Rotorua Trails Trust Strategy Workshop

28/10/2016

Greetings,

This is an invitation to a workshop by the Rotorua Trails Trust, together with RLC.

As you may know, the Trails Trust has taken over the work on mountain bike trails in the Whakarewarewa Forest from the Mountain Bike Club. It now is working on trails across the District, for all types of use (non-motorised).

The Trust needs a strategy to plan its future activities and priorities. Hence the workshop which is seeking ideas. It will be from 5-7pm on Wednesday 2 Nov at RLC.

You will be very welcome if you are free to come. No obligation. Bring your friends  - or tell them about this please.

The Rotorua district is rich in recreational spaces, including the 5,600 hectare Whakarewarewa Forest. In addition to the Forest network, there are a number of trails across the district managed by the Department of Conservation (DoC). Also within the district is Te Ara Ahi, the 48km cycle trail developed as part of Nga Haerenga (NZ Cycle Trails).

The walking and horse riding trails in the Forest have for many years been maintained by Rotorua Lakes Council (RLC). In May 2016, the responsibility for the maintenance and development of the mountain bike tracks was taken over by the newly-founded Rotorua Trails Trust.

The aim of the Trust is to develop, manage and advocate for a network of the world's best trails across the Rotorua district. As well as extending and enhancing existing trails for mountain biking, we will look to develop further trails that are suitable for walkers, trampers, runners, cyclists and horse-riders. To do this, we will work with iwi/hapū and other landowners, RLC, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, DoC and other government agencies and recreational and environmental groups.

The Trust is looking to develop a strategy that identifies the trails that the Rotorua community would like to see in the district. We will be holding a workshop to pull together an ‘ideas list’, as the starting point for the development of a list of priority projects. The feasibility of individual projects will be determined through consultation with appropriate stakeholders.

Hi everyone,

A big  "thank you"  to everyone who came to help with the last mid week Working Bee on the Lake Okareka Walking Track. A good section of track laying work was accomplished.

Brian Law (Project Supervisor) and Mike Goodwin have suggested that this week there will be an after work working bee on the track this coming Thursday 27th October 2016 from 4.30 - 5.00 pm until usually about 6.00 pm.
(They picked Thursday because the other afternoons look likely to be wet!

Please park in the Boyes beach car park and walk across the reserve to the paddle shed. You will have to walk on further if no one is there - although someone will probably be at the gravel pile.

Please bring a shovel and a rake - it will be laying textiles and then spreading gravel over the top - using the tractor and trailer to cart the gravel. Please wear suitable clothing and strong covered footwear. Please bring a drink of water and a snack. You will be expected to sign the H&S register for this Working Bee.

Hoping to see some of you on the afternoon of Thursday 27th October.

Kind regards
Sandra Goodwin

Hi everyone

First of all a huge thank you to everyone who came to help with the last Working Bee on the Lake Okareka Walking Track. Much track laying work was accomplished, along with more weed removal.

Brian Law (Project Supervisor) and Mike Goodwin have asked me to email everyone to say that they think the time is about right to begin evening working bees - and this week there will be an after work working bee on the track this coming Tuesday 18th October 2016 from 4.30 - 5.00 pm until usually about 6.00 pm. (They picked Tuesday because Wednesday looks likely to be wet!)

You will be expected to sign the H&S register.

Hoping to see some of you on Tuesday afternoon.

Kind regards

Hi there Lake Okareka Walking Track volunteers and supporters

Thank you to everyone who came and helped with last month's Working Bee on the track. It was a great working bee with a lot of work completed and good progress made.

This month's Lake Okareka Walking Track Working Bee will be held on Saturday 8th October 2016 from 9 amwhen there will be a Health and Safety talk before starting work.

Please park in the public car park area at Boyes beach.

Once again the work will be laying track textiles and covering these with another layer of gravel, along the beach area, between the Millar Road stream and the wetland. We will be using the tractor and trailer to cart the gravel.
Some people may prefer to do some cutting and pasting of small wattles and other weed species.

Children under 15 years who come to help with this Working Bee, must be accompanied by, and under direct supervision of, their parent or guardian.

What to Bring: wear suitable clothing, be prepared for any weather (sun hat and sunscreen, if fine & warm; wet weather gear, if it looks like rain!) gloves, strong footwear, shovel and rake. Bring pruning saw or loppers if you want to do weed work instead. No wheel barrows required. Please bring a drink and a snack.

Hopefully we will see many of you at this Working Bee.

Kind regards
Sandra Goodwin
