Tuesday and Saturday Walking Track Work

31/1/2017

Hi everyone

A big thank you to those who came to help on the Lake Okareka Community walking track last Tuesday!

There is another Working Bee this Tuesday afternoon.

WORKING BEE AFTER WORK - TUESDAY 31st January 2017 any time from 4.00 pm onwards

Once again it will be laying textiles and then gravel over the top, using the tractor and trailer to cart and spread the gravel.
Given that it looks like being a very warm afternoon, Boyes beach area is likely to be very busy, so please park in the car park area near the Te Waiariki Purea Trust Paddle Shed adjacent to Boyes beach (there may be other vehicles with the Te Au Rere Waka Ama club in there too, so please park considerately) and go to where the large heap of gravel is located.

Please wear suitable clothing and strong closed toes foot wear. Bring gardening gloves, a shovel and a rake (if you have them). Please also bring a drink and a snack, if you think you might get hungry/thirsty.

Please mark Tuesday afternoons in your diary as Working Bee afternoons for the Lake Okareka Community Walking Track, until further notice.

Walking Track Saturday Morning Working Bee on Saturday 4th February 2017 from 9 am to 12 noon - much the same instructions apply as are above. Health & Safety sign in at 9 am. Similar work to what the Tuesday afternoons consist of - laying textiles and gravel.

For further information please email sgoodwin@actrix.co.nz or phone 07 362 8865.

Kind regards

Hi everyone

First of all a huge thank you to everyone who helped with the Lake Okareka Walking Track working bee last week when we had some USA students come and help. Organiser of the students, Doug Farr from Tauranga, was absolutely delighted with the interaction that went on between the Landcare Okareka volunteers and the Northern Michigan University students and their teachers. Thank you also to the fantastic ladies (Pat McKenna and Frankie Blakely) for their home baking - which was most appreciated by everyone - and thanks to Pat McKenna and Jenny Grace for helping serve morning tea, washing dishes, etc.

WORKING BEE AFTER WORK - TUESDAY 17th January 2017
Once again it will be laying textiles and then gravel over the top, using the tractor and trailer to cart and spread the gravel.

Please park at the Boyes beach car park and walk across the reserve towards where the Te Waiariki Purea Trust paddle shed and the large gravel heap is located.

Please wear suitable clothing and strong closed toes foot wear. Bring gardening gloves, a shovel and a rake (if you have them). Please also bring a drink and a snack, if you think you might get hungry/thirsty.

Looking at the weather forecast, the weather should hopefully be okay for Wednesday afternoon/early evening - rain maybe later in the evening.

For further information please email sgoodwin@actrix.co.nz or phone 07 362 8865.

Hi there Landcare Okareka Volunteers

The Rotorua office of the Department of Conservation need some volunteers to help with putting out the new little wasp bait stations in reserve areas around Lake Okareka and Lake Tikitapu. This is the first stage of the new wasp control project using a bait called Fipronil, also known as Vespex or Xtinguish.

Some Landcare Okareka volunteers have already offered to help with this project - thank you. I understand that the bait stations will be put out this coming week.

If you are interested to help with this project please contact as soon as possible either Rebecca Newland rnewland@doc.govt.nz or Colette Wi cwi@doc.govt.nz
Give them your contact details.

Many thanks

Sandra Goodwin

Special Working Bee - Lake Okareka New Walking Track

8/1/2017

Hi there Lake Okareka Walking Track volunteers and supporters

We have a very special Working Bee happening on Tuesday 10th January 2017, on the new walking track at Lake Okareka, when we are hosting a group of approx. 20 international students, led by Doug Farr from Kuaka, an international educational specialist group based in Tauranga. Check them out on  www.kuaka.co.nz

We would like to have some of our local volunteers also come to help on this day. It is a nice way for these young people to meet some real New Zealanders who are interested in the environment.

WHEN: Tuesday 10th January 2017 from 9 am to around 12 noon or so - Health & Safety briefing and sign in at 9 am
PARKING: at Boyes beach car park area please, and walk across the reserve to the Te Waiariki Purea Trust paddle shed.
WHAT: track building - laying textiles and gravel mainly
WHAT TO BRING: wear suitable clothing and closed footwear; sunhat and sun block; gardening gloves.
If you have any on the following please bring them as well: wheelbarrows, spades, shovels, rakes - and if you have spare tools like these, please bring them as well. Make sure that your tools are labelled/named/marked in some way so you can get them back at the end of the Working Bee.

Bring a water bottle - which you can refill - we will have a water container.
Morning tea will be provided.

Sorry - but this working bee is for adults only this time - too many things will be going on and with too many people, for children to be safe at this one.

Can you please send me an email or phone call if you are able to come, so we have some idea of numbers for morning tea? Email: sgoodwin@actrix.co.nz or phone: 07 362 8865

Kind regards
