Dear Landcare Okareka Volunteers and Supporters

First of all thank you to everyone who came and helped at last month's Working Bee trimming along the plantings beside the drain along Lake Okareka Loop Road, especially in the area of the first bus stop. But also trimming plantings up at the entrance to the Lake Okareka Walkway and between the Walkway car park and Playne's Longford farm entrance. Thank you also to those who helped spread mulch around at the pump station plantings. And a big thank you to Mark Paget and RDC for paying for the hire of the mulching machine!

Another thank you from David and Karen Walmsley to all of the people from Landcare Okareka who went to help with the DOC planting at the start of the Tarawera Trail, at very short notice! Great work - and I hope you spotted yourself in the photo that went into the paper the week after the planting.

THIS MONTH'S WORKING BEE:
WHEN: Saturday 23rd November 2013 from 9 am to 12 noon

WHAT: Pruning and a general tidy up at the DOC camp, which is off Millar Road. Go up Millar Road to the end of the seal and turn left into DOC camp and day picnic beach. Please park in the car park as camp could be still busy at 9 am. Take care driving in to camp, narrow road, lights on, slow speed.
WHAT TO BRING: Suitable clothing and strong footwear, gardening gloves, sun screen and sun hat. Pruning gear - secateurs, loppers, hedge clippers, pruning saw, a wheel barrow if you have one, shovel or fork and rake (for speading mulch).

We will bring some cold drinking water and all the makings for morning tea.
Everyone welcome.

Kind regards
Sandra Goodwin

Locals Dig Deep for Tarawera Trail

The Tarawera Trail car park is nearing completion with approximately 1,000 trees being planted last week in the vicinity of the car park. Delays have meant the planting was happening much later than planned but the trees needed to get in as soon as possible, before the ground dried out too much.

Department of Conservation (DOC) staff were out planting most of last week but by the weekend there were still about 300 hundred native trees to go in.

Lake Tarawera local David Walmsley, who helped DOC during the week, saw an opportunity for the community to also lend a hand. The call went out Friday night and the community responded with spades. On Sunday morning 17 locals were happy to give up a couple of hours to get the trees planted and make a personal contribution to the project.

"The response from the community was fantastic” said Mr Walmsley. “It is heartening to see the enthusiasm for this project which will be a real asset to the area for both recreation and economic development".

DOC ranger Paul Cashmore was also impressed with the response from locals. "Not only did they turn out with short notice on a Sunday morning, but they also did a really top job," he said. "The decent rainfall we’ve just had will settle the trees in nicely".

Work continues to complete facilities at the car park so the first stage of the Tarawera Trail through to Hot Water Beach can be opened before the end of the year.

Background Information
The Tarawera Trail Trust

Everyone mucking in along the start of the Tarawera Trail
The Tarawera trail concept is for a world-class multi-day track around Lake Tarawera.

The project is being driven by the Tarawera Trail Trust, a partnership between the land owners/managers that border Lake Tarawera and Te Wairoa Valley. These include several Maori land owning trusts and the Department of Conservation (DOC).

The current list of trustees on the Tarawera Trail Trust that represent the land owners/mangers are: Te Ohu Wi Kingi (Chairman), Peri Marks, Herbie Langendoen, Tawhiri Morehu, Bob Te Aonui and a representative from DOC.

The Vision

The vision for the Trust is: "A world class trail where opportunities will arise for the tangata whenua and the people of Aotearoa/New Zealand."

This Trust will ensure that the aspirations of the landowners and the people of New Zealand are realised in respect of this place. By working with the Tourism Industry, regional and local businesses, and our local authorities we can provide a visitor experience that adds value in economic, conservation and social terms to Rotorua.

Tarawera Trail Planting

2/11/2013

Hello Landcare Okareka Volunteers

I realise this is very late notice, which I found on my email this morning (Saturday) but wondered if anyone would be able to help tomorrow morning Sunday 3rd November from 9 am with planting at the start  of the Lake Tarawera Trail car park area.

This is a little call for help.

As you know the opening of the Tarawera Trail has been delayed by the issues created by the main objectors to it.

This delay has meant that the landscape native planting for the area around the carpark and the walkway leading from it has been held up. Most of this planting would normally have been completed in August being the optimum time.

Would you as a local or supporter of the Trail have some time 9am this Sundaymorning to assist in completing this planting. If there are a few of us it should only take a couple of hours. Contact anyone else you think may like to help.

Bring a spade if you can.
This is a way we can show positive support for this initiate and our environment.

If you are able to help that would be great.
