Working Bee 22nd March

20/3/2014

Dear Landcare Okareka volunteers

Thank you to everyone who came to help at last month's Working Bee at the end of Acacia Road.
We are going back to the same area this month to continue with the weed cleaning up in the reserve.

WHEN: Saturday 22nd March 2014 from 9 am to 12 noon
WHERE: at the end of Acacia Road, Taumaihi Reserve.

WHAT: Pruning and tidying up in the Taumaihi Reserve. There are one or two quite large dead trees to be removed, so there will a chance of some firewood for some of the volunteers. We do have permission to go through the Lebua Lake House gates for just a few vehicles.
Mon the Lebua Lake House Manager will be there to give some of us access via the gates.

WHAT TO BRING: Wear comfortable gardening clothes, gardening gloves and sturdy shoes. Please apply sun screen and have a sunhat if it looks like it will be fine and sunny. Pruning gear such as secateurs, loppers and hedge clippers could be useful. Also a wheel barrow - or two - could be handy. Some people will be bringing car trailers.

We will provide the makings for morning tea and cold drinking water (for refilling drink bottles - or cups).

If you have any questions please either send me an email sgoodwin@actrix.co.nz or give me a call 362 8865

Please be mindful if you bring a vehicle to park carefully at the road end where the large gingko tree is - and not across local residents' entrance ways. Hoping to see many of you on Saturday 22nd March 2014.

Kind regards

Hi there Landcare Okareka volunteers and supporters

If any of you are free for a few hours on Tuesday 19th March 2014 from 9 am to help with some flax trimming along the walkway we would be most grateful. We will meet at 9 am at the Lake Okareka walkway car park on Acacia Road. If you are a bit later arriving, you will find us down the walkway....

Please wear suitable clothing and strong footwear, bring gardening gloves, sun hat and sun screen if sunny, some sheers or secateurs (that will cut flax leaves) and perhaps a rake to take leaves off the track. Also bring a water bottle and a snack. We will finish around mid - day.
Depending how for we get with this mini working bee there may be another in a week or so's time. I will be in touch.

Otherwise I hope to see some of you on Tuesday morning - let's hope it has fined up by then...

Kind regards

Good Afternoon

If you think your group members may be interested, we have some work to do on the Tarawera Trail to finish off getting signs in and a lookout built and other bits and pieces. This work will be carried out on week days from about mid march depending on the weather and other factors, could go through to dates in mid April. Much of the material will be flown in but we could use some help to manage public using the track while the helicopters are at work. Also for fit strong builder types some construction work and general maintenance. So if anyone is interested they can let me know and we will be in touch directly with details  them once dates are confirmed. Feel free to forward this to anyone you think may be interested in a minimum commitment of a full day.

Thanks,

Margaret

First Aid Training

4/3/2014

Good Morning,

DOC has organised a first aid course for staff for 6-7th March and would like to extend the invitation to your conservation groups to send a relevant member. We will fully sponsor 6 positions. The usual cost is $130 plus GST for the 1 day course and $225 plus GST for the 2 day course.

The 1 day refresher course is on the 6th only. Participants will need to do the 2 day course if their current certificate has expired. They are good for 2 years but a few months over is usually fine to do the refresher. If participants need unit standards reported to NZQA then there is a $30-$40 plus GST reporting fee depending on which units they require. This needs to be paid by the individuals but is not necessary to get the certificate.

Venue : DOC office 99 Sala St
Date: 6-7 March
Time: 9 – 4.30
Bring: Lunch and your current certificate if you can
Wear:  clothing suitable for outdoor scenarios

To register your interest contact Angaline on 349 7400 mornings or e-mail (she is copied into this).

We have limited places and will share the opportunity among the groups as much as possible.

Regards,

Margaret
