Lake Okareka Working Bee 26th April

Hello Landcare Okareka Volunteers and Supporters

First of all many thanks to everyone who came to help at last month's Working Bee, tidying up some of the dead weed trees in Taumaihi Reserve, at the end of Acacia Road. We have since mulched all of the branches that we heaped up, into a small and tidy heap of mulch - thanks to Paul Cashmore and DOC Weedbusters money for helping us with that. The area will be ready for some new plants around the edges when we undertake planting, perhaps next month.

In the meantime...

THIS MONTH'S WORKING BEE
WHEN: Saturday 26th April 2014 from 9 am
WHERE: Meet at the Acacia Road boat ramp and jetty area just before 9 am to go on the barge (thanks to Dennis Falconer)
WHAT: All sorts of tasks: main ones being to remove the protective netting cages from the pohutukawa trees along the walkway.
These trees have all done really well and now have enough growth on to compete against the possums. Plus members of the Landcare Okareka Steering Committee have been undertaking some successful possum control at intervals along the walkway to try to keep the numbers down. Another is to create light wells for the Project Crimson rata trees in the kanuka area. There will also be some flax trimming if there is time.
WHAT TO BRING: Suitable clothing and footwear, strong gardening gloves, pruning gear. May need fencing pliers or side cutting pliers, if you have any, to help remove the wire netting cages. If you have a pole pruner that could be useful for making light wells for the rata trees.

We will provide makings for morning tea and a snack.
