Working Bee - Saturday 25th May 2013

Dear Landcare Okareka Volunteers

Thank you to everyone who came and helped in Taumaihi reserve at the end of Acacia Road last month. We have made a start here but it will probably take a while to get all of the weeds around the edge of the beginning of the reserve under control - so there will be more working bees in this area, but not until the weather improves again later in the year and during the next summer.

The next couple of working bees, Landcare Okareka volunteers will be undertaking some tidy up and planting particularly near toilets - lake side of Acacia Road toilets, Boyes beach toilets, Steep Street toilets and the bush side toilets at Tikitapu (Blue Lake).
Some members of LOSC had a meeting recently with Mark Paget from RDC Parks looking at the struggling kowhais at Acacia Road reserve. Two of these near the Loop Road end (one has already died) will be removed and replaced by one tupelo tree - the same type of tree that is in the toilet & bbq area of the Acacia Road reserve. Castlecorp will also bring some soil to build the area up for that tree. They will also remove the wire netting around the other kowhai trees and put in some bollards to protect the trees from mowing and some mulch to keep the grass under control around them.

THIS MONTH'S WORKING BEE: Saturday 25th May 2013 from 9 am to 12 noon
WHERE: Boyes Beach Reserve, garden in front of toilets - then hopefully to Acacia Road toilets to plant up the garden facing the lake, as well and mulch it too.
WHAT: Planting and mulching
WHAT TO BRING: Please wear appropriate warm clothes (may need rain gear), strong footwear, gloves, planting spades, wheelbarrow (if you have one), shovel, fork and rake.
We will bring morning tea for everyone.

Hope to see many of you there. Any questions please contact Sandra and Mike 362 8865 or send an email.

PS There are some willow trees ringed up for firewood at Boyes Beach - won't be any good to burn this year, but should be okay if you can keep it dry to cure for next year - available on a first in, first served basis.
